During our recent staff meeting we looked at Teaching and Learning Te Reo Maori at Southwell. Attached below is the presentation Elliot Tiffany took us through. We looked at what our goals were for Southwell, minimum requirements, what year levels should be doing and basic pronunciation.
So what?
This is an area that needs development at Southwell as it is not covered well. Being part of a bi-cultural nation we need to ensure this is taught in schools. PTS1 is also something that I need to focus on this year which states:
Demonstrate commitment to tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Understand and recognise the unique status of tangata whenua in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Understand and acknowledge the histories, heritages, languages and cultures of partners to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
- Practise and develop the use of te reo and tikanga Māori.
Now what?
Below are the basic requirements for what we have to achieve by the end of term 2. I can introduce all of these topics through games that I have played with classes in the past. These games will cover counting and phrases. I need to ensure I time table some time to cover these in class. But also incorporate them on a daily basis.
