Genius Spelling Cards

What?
This year we are working with Lisa Smith who created Seed Learning. One of the resources she has created are called 'Genius Cards'. These cards assist students with their writing. They track directly back to the Literacy Progressions - laid out in a way that is user friendly. Genius Cards fit the space between 'I know it' and 'I am doing it by myself every time'. As a teacher of writing this should help to provide 'Explict' teaching, rather than just getting the group and getting it finished.

So what?
Every teacher can improve the way they deliver their writing program - well I know I am definitely one. Trying to conference with every child is quite a task so any resources that can make it easier should help in class.

Every class also has a diverse range of learners - unfortunately they aren't all at the same level. These cards should help this range of learners, especially if they aren't with the teacher as they are busy with another student.

Having a range of these cards will give ALL students something to work with.

Now what?
Now I have to learn about these cards and incorporate these into my everyday teaching. Currently I am reviewing these so I can get an order into KB by the end of the term. Making sure I know the levels of all my students, and their gaps, will ensure I get the right range of cards.

There are also some good little activities I picked up from Lisa during her presentation to us. Before she comes in again next term I would like to try and use these in my class. The main activities I want to try is 'Bossing Sentences' and 'Stripping Sentences'. The reason for this is because students in class use the same sentence type over and over. Hopefully after using these ideas they will get a better idea of sentence structure and be more confident using these different structures in their everyday writing.
