What?
One of the areas to work on at Southwell is the use of Te Reo in the classroom and the teaching of this to our students. Elliot Tiffany has created resources for teachers to follow throughout each term for the teaching of Te Reo Maori and Tikanga and has made himself available to help staff if needed. So what?
Te Reo Maori and Tikanga are important as we live in a multi cultural country and a lot of the students at Southwell have not been exposed to Maori Language. You can find more from the NZ Curriculum - The importance of learning te reo Maori.
Now what?
I have introduced some games in class during term one around numbers and basic instructions which most of the class responded to positively. This is something I must continue to work on and incorporate into my everyday teaching and not just one off games. Over this term I will look at how I can tie te reo in with the sessions I am already doing in class.
